Trip to Haiti May 16-23, 2011

To the members of the executive committee (New York Chapter). In pursuing the academic program of the AMHE I was in Haiti from may 16 to the 23rd teaching another session of neurology at quisqueya university. I was very pleased thistime to be assisted by Dr. George, one of the physicians who attended this course 3 years ago. He obtained a scholarship and spent few months in France and few more at Sherbrooke, in Canada learning how to teach neurology to medical students and also learning about basic science in neurology ( neuroanatomy and neurophysiology ). I was impressed by his ability to quickly understand and to properly explain the basic concepts of neuroscience.

The first session was conducted on Tuesday the 17th of may and the session was about the sensory system from the periphery to the sensory cortex in the brain. Emphasis was placed on the different sensory pathways within the spinal cord and their neurophysiology and neurochemistry were also explained.

Clinical applications were also discussed.

The next day, Wednesday the 18th the students were exposed to the motor system.Because it was a holiday we started at 1 o’clock and the session was over at 5pm.Clinical application with case discussion.

On Thursday we started at 9 o’clock ,broke for lunch at noon and started again at 1 pm and ended the afternoon session at 5pm. We covered the cerebellum and its connections, the imaging of the brain (cat scan of the brain and MRI) how to identify different brain pathologies. We also developed other to pics: Brain tumor and CVA. We also had a session on the neurological examination of a patient with video.

On Friday I went to Les Cayes to present a conference on CVA.

On Sunday afternoon I had a meeting with a heath care adviser for the new president, and on Monday I had a meeting with Dr Gladys Prosper the dean of the faculte de medecine ( universite d”etat d”Haiti) who showed the plan of reconstruction for the faculty. Further information regarding the reconstruction will be communicated later.

I returned to new York on Monday night 5-23- 2011

On Saturday April 23, 2011, taking advantage of the passage of a few members of the AMHE who had attended the annual congress of the AMH/AAFQ, Dr. Alix Lassegue, Executive Director of the Hospital of the State University of Haiti (HUEH), organized the official inauguration of the new Operating Suite of the said Hospital that had been donated by the AMHE in the aftermaths of the January 12, 2010 earthquake that destroyed most of the hospital, including the Division of Surgery and the adjacent old Operative Suite. At this ceremony, were also present, Ms. Marlene Thompson, Chief operating Officer, Dr. Jacques Pierre-Pierre, Medical Director and Chief of the Division of Orthopedics of the Hospital, Dr. Yolaine Edouoard Jean-Pierre, Chief of the Division of Anesthesiology and Director of the Operating Suite, Dr. Franck Telemaque, Chief of the Division of Surgery, Dr. Pierre Boncy, Chief of the Division of Urology, Mr. Desrouleaux, engineer/architect who built the suite, Ms. Myriam Boucan, Head Nurse of the suite, Dr, Guy Laroche and many other members of the OR and Hospital personnel.

Once again, the spirit of collaboration between AMHE and the Alma Mater was celebrated and a stronger cooperation was anticipated in the years to come, as more changes are about to come to the HUEH. Dr. Auguste represented the AMHE and took notes of all the needs and wishes of the different participants at the inauguration ceremony. Please find attached two of the several speeches pronounced at the occasion: the first one by Dr. Yolaine Edouard Jean-Pierre and the second by Dr. Auguste.

Samedi 23 Avril 2011
Inauguration du Nouveau Bloc Opératoire de l’HUEH
Discours du Dr. Yolaine Edouard-Jean-Pierre
Chef du Service d’Anesthésiologie
Directrice du Bloc Opératoire

M. le Directeur Exécutif de l’HUEH
M. le Directeur Médical de l’HUEH
Mme l’Administratrice

Merci
Et
A l’assaut de projets futurs!

From April 18 through 21, 2011, the Haitian Medical Association held its 59th Annual Congress in conjunction with the Association for Sickle Cell Anemia. The theme of the Convention was : “Anemie Falciforme et Pathologies Cancereuses – Quelle approche pour Haiti.” It took place at the magnificent Karibe Convention Center in Petionville. The opening ceremony was held on Monday evening, April 18, 2011 and included many eloquent speeches from the President of the Congress, Jean Cantave, MD, Claude Surena, MD, AMH President, Rene Charles, MD one of the two honorary presidents of the Convention, Mr. Wilson Sanon, President of AAFQ and A. Larsen, MD, Haitian Minister of Health and Population. Tasty appetizers and hors-d’oeuvres were served throughout the event, which came to a close with a colorful and energetic performance by a group of young Haitian folk dancers.

During the subsequent three days, numerous speakers took turns to discuss the current status, different clinical aspects and prospective steps being considered to improve the condition of our sickle cell anemia sufferers. Simultaneously, the state of cancer in Haiti, along with multiple specific challenges met by the care givers in Haiti in this area, was discussed. In particular, Dr. Jean Cantave offered to the audience a poignant and well documented historical review of cancer care in Haiti for the past 50 years or so.

The AMHE was prominently represented by the First Vice-President of the Central Executive Committee, Dr. Pierre-Paul Cadet, who moderated a session of the congress in replacement of the President Dr. Christian Lauriston, not available for the occasion. Another session was moderated by Dr. Frantz Michel Hyacinthe, former president of the Montreal chapter of AMHE. Our association was also represented by Dr. Dickens Saint-Vil, pediatric surgeon of the Montreal Chapter, who presented on the Management of various surgical illnesses in the Sickle cell population. Dr. Louis J. Auguste of the New York Chapter gave four presentations that were enthusiastically received on Innovations in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Breast Cancer, Triple Negative Breast Cancer: an emerging entity, Perception of the Haitian Women of Breast Cancer, as well as a detailed review of Medical and Surgical Options in the Management of Esophageal Cancer.

Dr. Auguste also participated in a panel discussion on the future of cancer care in Haiti, during which many recommendations were made to the government officials in attendance.

Overall, the congress was a great success that drew an attendance of over two hundred participants daily, including members of all the participating associations, guest physicians and allied health professionals, students of the four medical schools of Port-au-Prince, government officials and members of the press.

The participation of the AMHE was specially acknowledged by the AMH President, Dr. Claude Surena who reminded the audience of the long tradition of cooperation between the Association Medical Haitienne and the AMHE, in good times as in bad times and hoped for continued collaboration as the country faces increasing challenges in the health care arena. Dr. Surena was invited to the upcoming Congress of the AMHE, sponsored by the South Florida Chapter, in Panama and pledged to attend.

This November 4, 2010, the Long Island Business News organized a “Celebration of exceptional individuals on the front lines of patient care” at the Crest Hollow Country Club, Woodbury, NY. The selection was carried out by a panel of judges who reviewed the reports submitted by each hospital or health center on behalf of a given individual. The New York Chapter is proud that three of its members were finalists in the category of “Physicians Heroes.” They are Dr. Delcasse Joseph, Dr. L. George Angus and Dr. Louis J. Auguste.

We take pleasure in publishing the text submitted for each one of these outstanding members of the Chapter.

Dr. Delcasse Joseph: The human toll resulting from the last January‘s earthquake in Haiti was a call to action for Dr. Joseph, a general surgeon at South Nassau Communities Hospital.

Just two days after the quake, Dr. Joseph was performing surgery upon hundreds of injured Haitians under the harshest of conditions. Within six months, he made four life-savings medical missions in the Caribbean, treating hundreds of dispossessed victims.

At one point he spent six weeks in Haiti, sacrificing time from his thriving Freeport medical practice, as well as from his family.

Reflecting on how his medical missions have affected him personally, Dr. Joseph said: “There is always a schism between who we think we are and who we are. My experiences in Haiti allowed me to close the gap between the person I aspire to be and the person I am. It has further focused not only on my efforts to be a better person, but it also has greatly benefited my family as well.

Dr. Lambros Angus: is a physician who only gives of himself and is endlessly creative to bring comfort to those in distress. A graduate of Albert Einstein College of Medicine and holding a residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center as well as director of trauma at NUMC, Dr. Angus has never shirked the duties and responsibilities of the healer.

He created a program dubbed “Living without Violence” in the Roosevelt School District to reduce violent crimes in Nassau County. He has helped families in Haiti, volunteering his time to comfort those devastated by earthquakes, and is presently planning another mission to that ravaged country.

Closer to home in 1998, he started the Long Island Weight Reduction Center to help the morbidly obese. Diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, back pain and the excess weight, would have drastically cut the patient’s lifespan, if it were not for the skill and compassion of Dr. Angus.

Dr. Louis Auguste: Surgical oncologist at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and President of the New York Chapter of the Association of Haitian Physicians Abroad, battled infra-structure damage, sweltering heat, deficient supplies, electricity blackouts, unsafe water and widespread disease to bring aid to survivors of Haiti’s January Earthquake.
One of the first volunteers on the ground, Dr. Auguste was at the largest city hospital in Port-au-Prince even before local healthcare workers returned to their jobs, leaving patients without food and water. Dr. Auguste’s team administered immediate help, but their efforts were hampered by aftershocks, causing evacuation of emergency care and post-operative patients into the hospital’s open courtyard.

Though structural damage threatened everyone, the hospital assisted the majority of victims from downtown Port-au-Prince and nearby neighborhoods. Dr Auguste and his teams of heroes care for more than 1,200 patients in a space with a capacity of 700.

The AMHE is proud of the accomplishment of these members and congratulates them. The association pledges to continue the fight for a better health system in Haiti.
